2014/03 – Influences on the quality of laser marking

Contrasts in laser marked closures can be improved by adding pigments. Hereby a faster and more energy efficient marking is possible.

These pigments are sold in powder form and are mixed up with the plastic pellets before producing the closure caps. Depending on the type of plastic, its colour or the marking speed a dosage from 0.5 % to 2.5% is used.

The additives are sold as master batch which react very quickly using a laser beam with a wavelength of 1064 nm. The energy transferred by the laser beam leads to a color change of the additives. In this way dark contrasts without influencing the plastic itself can be realized within a fast marking speed.

Laser pigments are needed for nearly all colours, except (normally):
  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Black
Possible suppliers of laser master batches:
  • Clariant International AG
  • ACTEGA DS
  • Gabriel-Chemie Gesellschaft m.b.H.

The MOF PROMO HP with the new fiber laser technology allows high performance marking of plastic caps & crown corks with high contrasts and sharp contours. At the same time the almost maintenance-free laser will reduce operating costs.
